Missed stock opportunities? No, just lessons for the future
245 views
Can you learn anything from your missed trading opportunities? Editor of Morningstar Stock Investor newsletter, Matt Coffina talks about his personal experience with missed opportunities and elaborates on what he has learned from them.
We've all had regrets, buying at the bottom, missing a rising star but is it worth investors looking back at stocks they didn't buy at the right time? Or should they just move on and focus on future opportunities?
Matt explains why it's always useful to look back at both the stocks you bought and the ones that got away, to learn lessons for the future. Two stocks Matt admits he missed the boat on towards the middle of 2013 include Apple (AAPL). The stock was down about 40% from the previous high when it popped up on Matt’s radar. What went wrong was Matt’s strong focus on the long-term risks.
Matt is aware that there will always be far more missed opportunities than wins: “So don’t get too bogged down on the would-haves, the could-haves, and the should-haves” he says.
