Top UK economists: What we'd tell the Chancellor

As UK Chancellor George Osborne gears up to give details of this year's budget, three top UK economists tell Saxo TV what they would like to see from the Chancellor:

George Magnus, Senior Advisor, UBS: What I’d like to see from George Osborne I don’t think we’re going to get because this will be a strong electioneering budget with perhaps the Chancellor giving a few things away to increase the Government’s popularity. But I’d like to see a big agenda drawn up to try to restructure the way the British economy and the labour market works, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

Lee Hopley, Chief Economist, EEF: There are a couple of areas that really need some rapid focus from the government. The first one is on energy prices and the second aspect is still on access to finance. The picture is getting a little bit better but I think we need a change within the banking system.

Michael Petley,  Chairman, Global Macro Team, ECU: My advice to the Chancellor would be to do nothing, just let it be, don’t try and tinker too much just let the depth of the economic recovery take hold and do nothing to excite it in any great degree.
