Will Microsoft and Samsung's plans for the future be worth the effort? Tech expert and founder of pocketlint.com, Stuart Miles, gives his opinion after Microsoft unveiled its plans on how to get ahead in the “post-PC era. That includes an update for Windows 8.1, of which brings back mouse and keyboard functionalities.

At its Build Conferent, Microsoft also introduced its new voice recognition programme called Cortana, a modern voice-controlled personal assistant for your phone. Cortana, which is named after the virtual assistant in Halo, can be used to help compose emails and search the web.

Another company that has caught Stuart’s eye this week is 3D printing company M3D. It put its "affordable" printer, Micros, on popular funding platform Kickstarter. The micro machine initially aimed to raise USD 50,000 in a month. But instead, in raised an impressive USD 1.5m in just two days. Stuart says that even though you can’t invest in M3D or Kickstarter just yet, it’s worth for investors to have these types of businesses on their radar.

Samsung has unveiled its Samsung Galaxy S5, it has a heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and a faster camera. Stuart says he wasn’t overly impressed with its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S4, but thinks the S5 has enough potential to appeal to consumers - although not in comparison with Apple's iPhone 5S.
