Alibaba is the best known online retailer in China, the group makes the astonishing claim that it has almost 80% of total Chinese mobile retail. Remember, China has more than three hundred million online shoppers.

The online giant has now filed for an IPO on the New York stock exchange, so here are five things you didn't know about Alibaba:      

Alibaba dominates online retailing  in China with 11.3 Billion annual orders. That’s more than Amazon and Ebay put together.

Alibaba’s  retail websites have 231 million active buyers.

Last year Alibaba sites handled sales worth almost $6 Billion in ONE DAY, China’s ‘singles day’(a bit like Valentines’s day but for single people).

More than 4 Billion parcels were delivered globally by UPS in 2013, as a result of Alibaba sales.  

Because of Chinese restriction on foreign investment in internet firms, Alibaba shares will be sold in a holding company based on the Cayman Islands.
